Chicamocha Canyon is a geographical feature in Colombia located on the banks of the river Chicamocha during his tour of the departments of Boyaca and mainly de Santander, where it reaches its maximum depth near the city of Bucaramanga, between the towns of Aratoca, capita, and Los Santos.
Chicamocha river canyon is the result of erosion on the river bed, with the formation of large canyons on both sides. The canyon starts near the municipality in Soatá in the department of Boyaca, and meets most of its course in the department of Santander ending near the town of Lebrija. These plates are mountainous result of tectonic movements of the earth, where they spend and fault lines emerge include Chicamocha territory, to regions such as the Mesa de los Santos and the city of Bucaramanga but mostly extends on Aratoca municipality, making it the second largest canyon in the world [citation needed]. With more than 108,000 acres and 2,000 feet deep canyon was formed 46 million years ago in a place that was once a vast lake that allowed the formation of caves and sheltered marine animals which are still restos.1
In one of its slopes of the canyon, in via San Gil to Bucaramanga, in operation since December 2006, the National Park Chicamocha.2
On 07 of July 2009 The Foundation Seven Natural Wonders as one of the shortlisted candidates to hold the title of "The New 7 Wonders of Nature", the final selection for the vote carried Foundation experts and UNESCO and from 21 July 2009 will open voting will be until 2011 for surfers to choose the New 7 Natural Wonders of the planet
